Howard Roberts - The Praxis System: Guitar Compendium - Vol 1 - Book
Guitar instruction books are traditionally written in a progressive
fashion - Book 1 first, then Book 2 etc. However, the selection and sequencing of material is usually determined by
the book rather than the reader and the familiar result is that while the book progresses, the student doesn't. The Praxis
System by Howard
Roberts reverses this. You don't have to start with Book 1! You go where your interests lie. Just begin working on any subject
in any volume that attracts you. Because Praxis is a modular system, it can be re-assembled into many different combinations.
These different combinations of units can answer both varying curricular needs as well as individual interests! Titles include:
Style & Craft: Inventory of the Basic Moves * Inventory of the Basic Moves (continued) * Troubleshooting:
Preliminary Questions * Further Questions * The Finger Map: Chords * The Linear Conception of Harmony * Chord Construction
and Control * Chord Transformation * The Harmonized Scale * Chord Progressions Through the Individual Voice * Creative Directions *
Further Creative Directions.

Howard Roberts - Brilliant Jazz Guitar Legend!
Compiled & Edited By
Steven Herron
Howard Roberts was born on October 2, 1929 in Phoenix,
Arizona and taught himself to play the guitar at the age of 7. By the time he
was 12 years old he was
studying with Horace Hatchett who influenced Roberts to listen and appreciate
the complete spectrum of music for the guitar from the classics to jazz. He then
studied guitar technique for a while with concert classical guitarist
Howard Heitmeyer and later studied the Schillinger system with Fabian Andre. During
World War II Howard played guitar professionally in and around the Phoenix
vicinity getting valuable experience on the bandstand.
In 1950 Howard Roberts relocated to Los Angeles. Right after he arrived he went
to hear jazz guitar legend
Barney Kessel playing with Dave Brubeck at The Hague
jazz club in Los Angeles. At some point during the show Kessel introduced him to
guitarist Jack Marshall who was likewise in the audience. With Marshall's help
Roberts quickly went on to establish himself as one of the leading studio
guitarists in Los Angeles. Over the next twenty years Howard was showcased on
literally hundreds of recordings as well as many TV and film soundtracks.
Howard Roberts Plays "When Lights Are Low"
In the early 1970s he became really interested in teaching and began to appear
at numerous guitar seminars all over the United States. In partnership with
other guitar players, which included Jimmy Stewart, Howard Roberts composed and
released numerous outstanding jazz guitar books covering chord melody soloing,
single note improvisation, and sight reading. Unfortunately, many of these
original instruction books have now gone permanently out of print.
With the assistance and guidance of Howard Roberts the Guitar Institute Of
Technology (G.I.T.) ended up being of the
world's most distinguished instructional facilities for studying guitar. Roberts also
became involved in guitar design and construction. The Epiphone Guitar Company
produced their very first Howard Roberts Model in the late 1970s. In the early
1980s the Gibson Guitar Company, having actually purchased the Epiphone Guitar
Company, released a brand-new version of the initial model as part of the Gibson
guitar line.
Howard Roberts Plays "Star Eyes"
Howard Roberts always preserved an interest in jazz and was very active in
helping to establish in 1966 the "jazz guitar night" at Donte's club in Los
Angeles. Throughout the years Roberts was featured with numerous jazz artists
consisting of Shorty Rogers, Buddy De Franco, Pete Jolly, Bud Shank, Bill
Holman, Bob Cooper, Al Haig, Chico Hamilton, Gerry Mulligan, Oliver Nelson,
Bobby Troup, and Dave Grusin. In 1965 he won Downbeat magazine's "New Star"
award. He also composed an excellent month-to-month column for a number of years
for Guitar Player magazine.
Several of his later recordings reveal him as a jazz-rock fusion style guitarist,
however his earlier recordings showcased him as one of the finest all round jazz
guitar players following in the mainstream tradition established by jazz guitar
legend Charlie Christian. In the last several years prior to his death from
prostate cancer in 1992, Howard Roberts started to perform at concert venues all over
the world playing and teaching jazz guitar. He has left guitar players the world
over an important legacy of jazz guitar instruction books and
recordings.
