Wes Montgomery - Melodic Jazz Guitar Giant!
Compiled & Edited By
Steven Herron
Wes Montgomery was
born John Leslie Montgomery in Indianapolis, Indiana on March 6, 1923. He never
obtained official music training however, all through his youth he participated
in music and was encouraged by his older brother Monk -
who later on grew to become famous for pioneering the development of the Fender
electric bass guitar. In 1935 Monk bought him his initial instrument, a thirteen
dollar 4-string tenor guitar on which Wes created some essential technique. Wes
formally got the 6-string guitar relatively late in life, at 19. At first
motivated by the work of Charlie Christian, he taught himself by diligently
copying Christian's solos from recordings note-for-note. By the time he showed
up at his 20th birthday, Wes was gigging routinely at regional jazz clubs
playing Charlie Christian guitar solos!
Wes Montgomery's initial career break came when he landed a job with Lionel
Hampton's jazz big band in 1948. Unrelenting touring and grueling road work made
up his life for the following two years and by way of the experience he was
introduced to musicians like Charlie Mingus, Fats Navarro, and Milt Bruckner and
grew to become a skilled jazz guitar player. A devoted family man, Wes stopped
the extensive touring in 1950 and stayed in Indianapolis
delighting in erratic club gigs combined with non-musical day jobs.
Wes Montgomery Plays "West Coast Blues"
Montgomery's
preliminary recording session was with "The Master Sounds" - showcasing his
brothers Buddy and Monk on vibraphone and bass respectively - on December 30th,
1957 for the Pacific Jazz recording label. The tracks were launched as the
record album "The Montgomery Brothers and Five Others". Two other recordings were
made by "The Master Sounds" - "Kissmet" in 1958 and "The
Montgomery Land Quintet" in 1959. None of these releases brought Wes Montgomery the
widespread acknowledgment that his extraordinary jazz guitar talent should have.
Jazz guitar player Wes Montgomery was the leading force
behind the 2nd exceptional epic of modern jazz guitar music! If we think about
the very first as beginning with the early experiments of jazz guitarist Charlie
Christian at the end of the 1930s and early 1940s, then the next revolution
belongs to Wes Montgomery. Much like the the music renaissance caused by
Christian's solo flights, Montgomery had a similarly dazzling effect on his
contemporaries.
Almost all jazz guitar players went scooting back to the woodshed to include his patented octave playing and block chording into their tunes and to emulate his warm fleshy tone, blues based conception, and extremely swinging rhythmic feel. Jazz guitar music alone has become defined by his presence as either pre-Montgomery or post-Montgomery in idea and level of performance. Essentially each jazz guitar player to turn up after Wes Montgomery has actually borne the mark of his influence - Joe Pass, George Benson, Pat Martino, Pat Metheny, Emily Remler, Larry Coryell, Larry Carlton and Lee Ritenour to name just a few!
