Steven Crowell - One Of The Best Jazz Guitarists Alive Today!
Compiled & Edited By Steven Herron

At the age of 19 Steven Crowell began studying with the fabulous jazz guitar player Warren Nunes and in fact shared a residence with Warren for 2 years. In 1964 Steven went to Diablo Valley College while at the same time providing instruction in jazz guitar music full-time and raising a family. He researched classic and 20th Century harmony and theory along with Dr. Coleen Bicknell and the now deceased Gordon Keddington, acquiring his California state teacher qualifications. He likewise wrote his initial collection book of jazz guitar chord melody solos.

In 1969 Steven Crowell left his teaching position to go on the road with a stage band and for the following 10 years improved his abilities as a jazz guitarist by playing live 5 to 6 evenings a week. In 1979 Steven published the very first section of his jazz guitar study program that was based primarily upon his special playing and academic experiences. His program was met with lots of praise! Guitar Player Magazine called Steven's books "some of the most effective" and a little later was broadened into a 4 year college level jazz guitar training program.

 Steven Crowell Plays "Penthouse Serenade"

Jazz guitarist Steven Crowell began accordion lessons at the age of 9. Even at that youthful of an age Steven was "hearing" songs and jazz chords in his head. He explains that if his accordion instructor had actually shown him the rich chords he was "creating in his head" - rather than polkas and waltzes - he would probably be a jazz accordion player today! At the age of 15 Steven started to get into the jazz guitar and within 2 months was playing in neighborhood groups!

It was after hearing and talking to jazz guitar players Eddie Duran and Barney Kessel that Steven's interest in jazz guitar improvisation and chord melody jazz guitar soloing was awoken. He started playing the jazz guitar and upright bass in the senior high school jazz big band while tutoring with a lot of area educators. Just out of senior high school, Steven Crowell put together a band along with Sylvester Stewart (Sly of "Sly & The Family Stone") which released a number of recordings and played live at Lake Tahoe for the entire summer season.

Much more recently Steven Crowell has founded The Jazz Science Guitar Institute and has released a series of impressive jazz guitar technique manuals based upon his revelation of The 84 Jazz Guitar Equations - a methodology that helps with soloing on the whole guitar fretboard by blending scales and arpeggios into one idea. For many years Steven has played in clubs, dining establishments, and jazz festivals.

He has also collaborated with some of the leading individuals in the pop music business including George Burns, Bob Newhart, The Coasters, The Diamonds, Big Tiny Little, and in motion pictures with Tommy Lee Jones ("Cobb"), and Whoopie Goldberg ("Sister Act"). He not too long ago played jazz guitar with The Ted Herman Orchestra in the soon to be released movie "The Encore of Tony Duran".
