"Guitar Chord Harmony Secrets - Part 1"

Dear Advancing Guitarist,

Welcome to the fascinating world of guitar chords and harmony! While this report is not meant to replace any of the fine harmony / theory books available that elaborate in greater detail, I think you will find it contains information that you can quickly and easily use to enhance and expand your own guitar playing regardless of what style of music you play. So let's get right into it!

The two octave C Major scale would contain the following notes going from low to high: C1 - D2 - E3 - F4 - G5 - A6 - B7 - C8 - D9 - E10 - F11 - G12 - A13 - B14 - C15.

Notice that there is a number following each of the notes. These are the scale degrees that will be used to explain the "spelling" of the various chords.

The C Major chord would consist of the 1st, 3rd, and 5th degrees of the Major scale or C, E, and G.

Instead of just playing a C Major chord you could "embellish" the song by using any of the following chords which will sound richer and fuller:

C Major 6th - which contains the 1st, 3rd, 5th, and 6th degrees or C, E, G, and A.

C Major 7th - which contains the 1st, 3rd, 5th, and 7th degrees or C, E, G, and B.

C Major 6/9 - which contains the 1st, 3rd, 5th, 6th, and 9th degrees or C, E, G, A, and D.

C Major 9th - which contains the 1st, 3rd, 5th, 7th, and 9th degrees or C, E, G, B, and D.

C Major 13th - which contains the 1st, 3rd, 5th, 7th, 9th, and 13th degrees or C, E, G, B, D, and A.

The C minor chord would consist of the 1st, b3rd, and 5th degrees of the Major scale or C, Eb, and G.

Instead of just playing a C minor chord you could "embellish" the song by using any of the following chords which will sound richer and fuller:

C minor 6th - which contains the 1st, b3rd, 5th, and 6th degrees or C, Eb, G, and A.

C minor 7th - which contains the 1st, b3rd, 5th, and b7th degrees or C, Eb, G, and Bb.

C minor 6/9 - which contains the 1st, b3rd, 5th, 6th, and 9th degrees or C, Eb, G, A, and D.

C minor 9th - which contains the 1st, b3rd, 5th, b7th, and 9th degrees or C, Eb, G, Bb, and D.

C minor 11th - which contains the 1st, b3rd, 5th, b7th, 9th, and 11th degrees or C, Eb, G, Bb, D, and F.

C minor 13th - which contains the 1st, b3rd, 5th, b7th, 9th, and 13th degrees or C, Eb, G, Bb, D, and A.

The C 7th chord would consist of the 1st, 3rd, 5th, and b7th degrees of the Major scale or C, E, G, and Bb.

Instead of just playing a C7th chord you could "embellish" the song by using any of the following chords which will sound richer and fuller:

C9th - which contains the 1st, 3rd, 5th, b7th, and 9th degrees or C, E, G, Bb, and D.

C13th - which contains the 1st, 3rd, 5th, b7th, 9th, and 13th degrees or C, E, G, Bb, D, and A.

The C7thsus4, C9thsus4, and C13thsus4 are merely the above C7th, C9th, and C13th chords with the 4th degree of the Major scale or F added to them which replaces the 3rd degree.

By the way, a C9th sus4 and a C11th chord are really the same chord since they contain the same notes.

Hopefully, this report has helped clarify some of the confusion and mystery surrounding chords and harmony in general!

Charlie Byrd - Bossa Nova Guitar Master
Compiled & Edited By Steven Herron

The sultry sound, feel, and beautiful melodies of Brazilian bossa nova guitar music affected plenty of pop superstars, entertainers of all nationalities, as well as famous artists then and now. The list consists of Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Herb Alpert, Oscar Peterson, Cannonball Adderley, Dusty Springfield, Stephen Sondheim, George Michael, Kenny G, Eric Clapton, Nina Persson, Norah Jones, and Diana Krall.

The success of bossa nova in the U.S.A. set the stage for the importing and worldwide promoting of regional Brazilian song writers such as Antonio Carlos Jobim, Luiz Bonfa, Joao Gilberto, Bola Sete, Baden Powell, and Sergio Mendes. It has come to be expressive of and associated with sultry South American seasides, charming romances, and an easy going exotic way of life!

In the 1950s guitarist Charlie Byrd was already transforming the pop music scene with his blend of jazz and classical nylon string guitar concepts in a 3 piece group that featured bassist Keeter Betts and percussionist Bertel Knox. Their repertory merged standard small combo jazz along with Charlie Byrd's solo classical nylon string guitar pieces. The group experienced terrific response in the Washington, D.C. area and quickly rose to the ranks of roving American jazz ambassadors recruited by the U.S. State Department.

Charlie Byrd's main achievement will certainly always be seen as delivering the South American popular music known as bossa nova to America pop recordings and eventually the globe's audiences. In a bigger sense, his initiatives and success expedited the now typical category of world music, then just an interest and a niche specific market to a lot of people. Along with Charlie Byrd's record albums the art of jazz guitar music got one more venue of expression still considerably in usage today, a half century since Byrd initially made his mark with "Desafinado".

Charlie Byrd Plays "Samba De Orfeu"

The year 2012 commemorates the fifty year anniversary of bossa nova jazz guitar music getting into the popular culture, promoted by Charlie Byrd and his collaborator, saxophonist Stan Getz. Their hit recording "Desafinado" got to #15 on the American Top 40 charts in October, 1962 and was a very early crossover success, among just a handful in jazz. "Desafinado" continued to be on U.S. pop play lists for 10 weeks and also got to #11 on the U.K. charts in 1962.

What started as a concept and music experimentation envisioned by Charlie Byrd swiftly ascended to higher proportions and opened up the floodgates for the bossa nova trend that ensued. Take into consideration the following hit song by Stan Getz and Astrud Gilberto, launched as the British Invasion was in full speed. "The Girl From Ipanema" reached #5 in 1964 and garnered a Grammy Award for Record Of The Year in 1965.

Charlie Byrd was certainly one of the most creative and unique guitar players in jazz and bossa nova music! He was an avid follower of gypsy jazz guitar player Django Reinhardt, a skilled composer, and an entertainer that worked in show business along with Tennessee Williams' play "The Purification" and on the bandstand with The Woody Herman Orchestra.

Charlie Byrd was a leading innovator of using the nylon string guitar as a jazz solo instrument when everybody else was going electric and a pupil of classical guitar player Andres Segovia that wanted to combine classic nylon string guitar techniques along with jazz improvisation. His position in the recorded history of jazz guitar tradition would certainly be guaranteed based simply on those qualities.

In review, Charlie Byrd's impact on the world's popular music has actually been extensive and remains to reverberate in virtually every region of the entire planet. Charlie Byrd started playing the acoustic guitar at age 9. He originally studied with his dad who played a range of fretted and stringed instruments. Charlie Byrd's first heroes were jazz and swing guitar players Charlie Christian and Django Reinhardt. He listened to and got to perform with Django in Paris in the mid 1940's while in a touring Army stage band.
